hey guys,
found another site with loads of tutorials: http://tutorial-index.com/ (non-video tutorials) i think we need a thread (under "tutorials") just for tutorial sites. we could just ask for posters to use a naming convention similar to the rest of the site, like: V - MISC - Many graphics programs covered B - PS - Boasts 12,000 tutorials N - HDRI - 14 great beginner tutorials N - FLASH - advanced actionscripting site etc, etc. (V = video N = non-video B = both) just make a sticky asking that people don't post every tutorial site out there... just ones that stand out in quality, variety, or sheer volume of tutorials. any thoughts? .beetlewing.

Yeah, I agree. There are a lot of links posted regarding individual tutorials / tutorial websites and they are getting harder to find / locate with each new topic posted. It would be nice to have them bundled together (maybe even in one stickied post) so people are able to access them easily.
I also agree on NOT posting each and every website / tutorial out there... there are simply waaay too many of them. Some of them really awful btw. If we would go the stickied post route someone will need to monitor that topic and if new posts are added: 1- check to see if the quality of the posted links is up to par (delete if not) 2 - modify the first post to include the new link(s) & delete the added post If we go the seperate forum / thread route someone will need to monitor that forum / thread and if new topics are added: 1 - check to see if the quality of the posted links is up to par (delete if not) 2 - implement and monitor the naming convention suggested by Beetlewing |

hey john,
i'd much rather see a section, rather than one posted topic. that way, there could be a separate sticky for each, like photoshop, max, various/multi, flash, etc. then there'd be a seperate post for each link submitted, where people could leave comments or discuss the methods used in the tutorials, etc. below the sticky, for feedback. this could come in handy... for example: when we were all discussing the horrible download system on that one site... one discussion like that would kill a "1 topic" posting method. does this make any sense? haha (i'm dead tired right now) take care, .beetlewing.

Hey guys,
I agree that there are many tutorials out there and I really want to reference the good ones. When setting up these forums I intended for it to be a resource site with all important and relevant tutorials hosted locally (in one form or another) so there would never be broken links or expired posts (my main beef with CGSociety). I also wanted things to be broken into the related categories, such as "modeling" or "digital painting." sadly, many tutorials don't follow this clear cut organization as they span many topics, but I wanted someone interested in a particular topic to go to that section and see all kinds of cool resources. This often mean heavy cross-linking like what was done for the organic modeling series. In a perfect world, these link farms which pop up occasionally on the boards would be dissected, reviewed, and only the better ones archived and hosted locally in their related sections so the user only sees the tutorials they really "need" to see to learn a topic/technique. As time goes on, I'm realizing this is becoming harder and harder to do and less realistic. At least with the current staffing. It would be a huge task, and will require constant monitoring. I would like to see more quality tutorials posted here, but want to keep searching/wandering of the user to a minimum. If you have a particular idea that you think fits the above "vision", I'll support it and try to make it happen. |

Yes, I fully agree.
The monitoring and getting the tutorials converted in some form to host them locally parts will be very demanding... The spanning of topics in "third party" tutorials is pretty much unavoidable. So we would either need to split them up when we copy them locally or do the crosslinking thing. Crosslinking is not the most ideal solution because we would then have to implement some sort of method to point the reader to the right page (or whatever) in that particular document. Splitting them up will probably be virtually impossible without ruining the concept of the tutorial (most of the time anyway). Hmmm... I will (need to) think about this some more. |

seriously though, that all makes sense Eric - and the more i think about it, the more of a nightmare the idea becomes, haha. something nobody's really mentioned is the fact that hosting PDFs of other sites' tutorials could eventually turn into a bad legal issue, if permission wasn't granted by the original site. i wouldn't want to see that happen to this great forum, or to Eric, since i think he'd probably be held responsible. ...and as far as making a whole section for linking other sites, there's SO many out there that going that direction could just turn this site into a portal. let's not forget what makes THIS site so great: the tutorials made and hosted here, and the community on these forums. common sense pretty much says "if you can't find it here, and no one can help you, then hit google." :P i don't think there's anything wrong with "sorry i couldn't help, here's a link that might explain it better..." - it seems to have worked fine so far. so for the record - i withdraw my suggestion, after considering it more thoroughly. ;D as an alternative idea - i'd happily set up and host a sister site, strictly for external (user-submitted?) catagorized links, if we wanted. it could easily be set up with a ranking system, so users could rank the links and provide feedback via comments. yeehaw Ego-Portal.com :D take care, .beetlewing.
